Shady Grove Cruise-in
It was a bit chilly, but while everyone else “…were nestled all snug in their beds” the custom, classic and antique auto buffs were out in force, meeting at what has become a Sunday morning ritual for many. Cruising in to the car meet at the corner of Shady Grove rd and Crabs Branch parkway were cars, trucks and bikes of all makes, models and descriptions. Discussions ranged from what type radiator was best to how the roll bar hooked into a Cobra. One discussion that piqued my interest was the discussion of the “grove” that Shady Grove Rd. was named for, so I decided to do some digging.
I found the following on Wikipedia, “Shady Grove is an unincorporated area of Montgomery County, Maryland. It has a population of 5,000-7,000, between the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg, mostly in zip codes 20850 and 20855, though the exact boundaries are not officially defined. Shady Grove is one of Montgomery County’s upper middle class areas. The area is best identified by Shady Grove Road, which is exit 8 off of I-270. ”
However, I can find nothing further. One cruise-in member said the original ‘grove’ was just below the I370 intersection but I cannot find anything yet to verify that.
If you have information about the actual location of the original ‘grove’ or the history of the area, please post a comment and share.
